After 25 years of its release, actor Madhuri Dixit clarified rumours about her allegedly turning down a role in the 1999 film Hum Saath-Saath Hain. In a recent interview, she explained that it was director Sooraj Barjatya who decided not to cast her in the film.
Madhuri Dixit recently addressed rumours that she had turned down a role as Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan’s sister-in-law in Hum Saath-Saath Hain. In an interview with Zoom, the actor said, “I didn’t say no to Hum Saath-Saath Hain, but the makers felt it would look awkward if I played Salman’s bhabhi. When he comes and touches my feet and all that.”
She continued, “It is not me who decided these things. There was a story floating around that I said no. Rather, it was them who said no. Sooraj ji said that they were feeling awkward to cast me in that role.”
The role was ultimately portrayed by Tabu.
However, in an earlier interview with Rediff, Madhuri had said, “If you put me in Tabu’s place and visualised Salman touching my feet, I think people would have hooted in the theatres. And I think it’s right, because of Hum Aapke Hain Koun, which was a love story between Salman and me.”
Hum Saath-Saath Hain is a family drama which revolves around a huge joint family that eventually drifts apart due to a misunderstanding. The film holds a special place in the history of Hindi cinema.
